SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL
I am very pleased to be involved in the excitement and anticipation of another productive school year.
To the vital members of our Middlesex team, I offer my thanks for your truly terrific results over the past years. To those employees who have recently joined the Middlesex Borough Public Schools, we welcome you and are prepared to help you to be successful in your most important assignment - educating the youth of our community. Our fine cadre of administrators wish you all well and will assist you toward an outstanding beginning in your tenure here.
Our staff members’ activities as professional educators enable this school district to continue to achieve our mutual goal of maintaining an organization of excellence. I firmly believe that we are able to create a supportive and welcoming environment, where every child wants to come to school each day. As we work to provide an inclusive educational environment for our students, it is important that the workplace affords staff members professional growth and personal fulfillment. The results of our collaborative performances give strong indications that we are all being successful.
Recent budgetary analysis indicate that our district benefits costs have decreased - a most uncommon situation. The reason for the decline is that there have been fewer medical claims filed. According to our benefits professionals, this drop in claims may be the result of our employee assistance program, coupled with a low stress work environment.
Once again, our district was given a complete and extensive operational evaluation by the State. We were informed by the Commissioner of Education that we are a “High Performing District”. Our average of scores this year was just below 98%. This assessment of the district was an assessment of all of the work of our dedicated employees, and I heartily congratulate everyone on a job well done!
The real indicators that we are having a great level of success are that student achievement levels are continually improving. Students are excelling in programs including curricula and co-curricula. For the past three years, our HSPA scores have continued their upward trend. Both Math and Language Arts scores exceeded our DFG and no general education student has been partially proficient in the exam. We also greatly improved our State Biology scores, decreasing our partially proficient percentage by over 7.5% and exceeding our DFG for Proficiency for the first time from 2011 to 2012. These results were key for Middlesex High School to be rated as the #6 high school in Middlesex County, according to the Star Ledger. New Jersey Magazine rated us 155th out of 328 schools in the State, a 28 place improvement over our 2010 score.
Looking to the 2012-2013 SY, we are implementing a major Language Arts program, “Journeys", as well as innovative Science curricula in Grades 3-5. All K-5 Language Arts classrooms will have iPads, coordinating with our reading program. We are hiring two more Basic Skills teachers per school in the early grades. A new administrative management system, “Genesis” has been contracted to replace CIMPLE. This program will be user-friendly and extend our administrative capabilities in all functional areas.
Despite inadequate State funding, our efforts over the past eight years have been directed to the care and development of our students. We greatly appreciate the outstanding support of the Middlesex community and always welcome your input. In closing, I reiterate the sentiment that “No One Rises To Low Expectations”.

Governor Chris Christie Visits MCS Summer Camp!

Governor Chris Christie paid a visit to Middlesex Community School Summer Camp on August 6th, prior to signing the Tenure Bill at Von E. Mauger Middle School. The Governor fielded questions from the children, asking them about their summer camp experience. Campers gave details of their activities and trips to RVCC Planetarium, Stelton Lanes,Gabriel's Fountain Ice Creamery, and upcoming trip to Schaefer Farm. Music teacher and Camp Supervisor Ron Coupland accompanied students in a performance of "The Garden Song", which was enjoyed by the Governor as well as State Senators, Assemblymen, and other dignitaries in attendance. It was an experience the children and staff will not soon forget!

Unused Emergency Days
Middlesex Borough Superintendent of Schools Dr. James C. Baker would like to advise you that the 2012-2013 district School Calendar and MEA Agreement state that, “in the event there are any unused snow/emergency days, they will be given back during the Memorial Day weekend.” Due to the fact that two snow/emergency days were not used this school year, there will be no school for students on Tuesday, May 28th and Wednesday, May 29th, 2013.
The schools will be open for a Professional Development Day for staff members only on Wednesday, May 29th, to provide necessary training on NJ Teacher Evaluation mandates.

Don't Text & Drive
"She Could Have Just Said 'I Love You'". This is the 2012 entry for the Middlesex County 3D PSA contest that four students from our MSG Varsity Club shot and edited. Jeff Pinedo, TJ Griffin, Gerson Artola, and Zach Molnar contributed their time and talent to make a very effective PSA that denounces texting while driving.
Unfortunately, this PSA did not place in the contest but it was one of the most effective PSA that was submitted among the 14 participating schools.
