PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Working together with cooperative students, parents, and families definitely benefits total student performance. Hazelwood School’s staff of highly qualified professionals is proud to have such a strong relationship. At Hazelwood School, our philosophy includes all our children as being “special.” Along with my support of this philosophy, it is my personal feeling that “all” children can and will learn. Hazelwood’s Preschool through grade three programs are ready to provide the best educational opportunities possible for our children. As this year progresses, I have noticed many exciting learning opportunities in our curricula supported by the use of the latest technology. Teachers in Kindergarten through grade three are using ENO Boards, ELMO machines and LCD projectors to bring lessons to a new and exciting level of learning.
Our Preschool program began with full attendance this year. Registration for next year’s program has begun. However, at this time we are happy to accept wait list registrations for future openings for the 2010-2011 school year. For more information regarding programs, you may call 732-317-6000 Ext. 24602. Our full day Kindergarten classes continue to provide initial learning experiences for students while setting a foundation for scaffolding learning in future grades.
Thanks to the never ending efforts of our PTO, students enjoy learning through a variety of methods. Our PTO volunteers raise money through fundraisers which have provided our students with updated playground equipment, a newly installed flat screen TV in our Library as well as supporting our assembly programs just to name a few.
At Hazelwood School, we continue to raise academic expectations because we all realize that when you expect the best from students, they perform up to our expectations. We expect our second grade students who will participate in the NJPASS as well as our third graders who will take the NJASK standardized tests, to do their best. Last year’s scores indicated that our Every Day Math program is quite successful. Learned strategies help students with higher level thinking skills.
Throughout our classes students learn strategies such as “scooping” which develops reading fluency. We are fortunate to have a Reading Consultant in our district who provides the most recent methods and strategies that are first hand Rutgers researched tips for students. Professional development in-service as well as out of district sessions provide additional methodology for staff to learn. At Hazelwood School, we are all a part of a community of life long learners.
As Hazelwood School’s Principal, I encourage you to read everything that is sent home from school, attend PTO meetings, and most importantly look at your child’s folder every day. Current research studies show that students who have parents that are involved in their education do better in school and achieve better grades. The Hazelwood Website is also a place of interest for you as parents. The Hazelwood School Parent Handbook can be accessed through our website. This handbook has been designed to help with questions you may have from time to time. This will be a handy reference for your use. Our web address is www.middlesex.k12.nj.us. While at this site you can visit your child’s teacher’s page by clicking on Hazelwood School and then choose the link for Hazelwood Teachers, or choose another link that may assist you. However, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher/s or me with questions/concerns. Together as a T.E.A.M. between school and home, and with mutual cooperation, we can make a difference in the lives of our children.

REMINDERS:
Parents are asked to stand BEHIND students when they line up in the morning. It is less distracting to students and helps the staff to lead the children, ready to begin a new day.
PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON SCHOOL PROPERTY
Class Parents will NOT be calling on inclement weather days. If the weather is bad, watch NEWS 12, listen to WCTC or call the Middlesex Board of Education at (732) 317-6000 for a recorded message.
MORNING DROP OFF PROCEDURES:
Please obey all traffic regulations. Do not park in front of driveways or too close to the stop signs.
Parking lot is for Staff Only
If you choose to drop your child off on Ambrose Avenue in the morning, please arrive from Hazelwood Avenue going toward Dorn Avenue. All cars facing the same direction make things easier for everyone.
Please pull up to one of the two paved areas, let your children safely out and pull up so that the cars behind you may pull up to the paved area as well. If you would like to wait and watch your child get into the school, please make the right turn onto Dorn Avenue and wait along the street there, so that other parents may drop their children off.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
A NOTE ABOUT CLASSROOM PARTIES and READERS
While your generosity and thoughtfulness are appreciated, please refrain from sending in extra goody bags or food for parties, as mentioned in our Wellness Policy. The class parents will let you know if they need for you to bring anything for the parties. Also, “mystery readers” need not bring a treat to accompany the book they are reading.

AAP
The Academic Advancement Program (AAP) is available to qualified students to supplement and enhance classroom work. AAP stresses critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and it provides increased academic challenges to 2nd and 3rd graders. AAP classes are scheduled on a pull-out basis, and the primary emphasis is in Language Arts and Mathematics.
In addition, Mrs. Kornstein, the district-wide AAP facilitator, will be working with selected 3rd graders who have been recommended by their teachers to address specific needs in strengthening their writing skills.

BEAUTIFICATION
The Beautification Committee was formed in 1998 by the School Nurse, Mrs. Charles. The committee encourages parents, children and teachers to enjoy the beauty of our natural environment. With money from an environmental grant from the Middlesex County Department of Solid Waste Management, the Butterfly Garden has been expanded. The plants were started from seeds grown in the first grade classrooms. The grant also provided butterfly kits for second grade classrooms and solar ovens for third grade. The Beautification Committee also maintains a strawberry patch and a compost bin. This year, monies obtained by another grant will be used for recycling projects. Preschool teacher, Ms. Siegel and second grade teacher, Ms. Wilczewski have teamed together to head this project.
PEANUT SAFE & ALLERGY AWARE
We have several students who have serious food allergies. The staff of Hazelwood School is diligently working with all students to make them aware and to give them the information they need to help keep their friends safe. Please speak with your children about not sharing food items and being sensitive to all individual needs of others.
